In the dynamic world of mechanical keyboards where innovation intertwines with passion, lies a unique connection between creators and enthusiasts. Many designers find themselves inspired by those who came before them, and are drawn to the craft with the intention to give back to their community. The growth of the hobby can be greatly attributed not only to this cycle, but also the recent spread of it to platforms beyond the forums of Geekhack and OTD. Youtube specifically has become integral to the spread of this hobby, with many viral videos leading thousands down the rabbit hole of this hobby. Charo, one of the more recent additions to this new generation of hobbyist keyboard creators, showcases the latest trends and innovations but also fosters a deeper conversation about the importance of design language and what makes a board withstand the test of time.
For Charo, this dedication to individuality through design goes beyond the mechanical keyboard hobby. Fashion designers like Rei Kawakubo, behind Commes des Garcons, and Yohji Yamamoto, “push the norms of what clothes should be,” Charo explains, using “materials, textures and proportions that you aren’t likely to see anywhere else.” Charo finds himself putting heavy emphasis on “being able to express yourself through what you do.” In relation to the mechanical keyboard hobby, this can make “mundane tasks like writing an email” more personal and elevate the importance of one’s workspace by choosing to support and use a specific designer’s keyboard.
Charo’s pull towards finding personal identity through design reflects back onto the designers and brands themselves, and the ways in which they create an identity through their expressions of art. “I have always loved the work of Linworks and the crazy bezels seen in their boards that aren’t really seen anywhere else in this hobby,” Charo states. The Linworks Dolice, for example, stands out for its striking features. With its bold curves and glass bottom weight allowing a glimpse into the board’s inner workings, the Dolice is an exemplary piece that captures the essence of high-end design-work.
Although unique design choices and languages are important for any brand looking to create a signature style, the history of keyboard design is also just as significant. One board that has made its way to Charo is the TGR 910 v2 ME. It is not just his favourite board “due to the sound or feel, but more so the history of the board” Charo claims. The original TGR 910, designed by yuktsi, had a limited group buy run of 23 units back in 2016. Redesigned and released in 2022 with the help of Monokei and SingaKBD, the board instantly became a hit. The ability to revive such a historically important board brought, as stated by Charo, the “TGR boards to the desks of so many enthusiasts.” Although many do desire simply the experience of owning such a feat of design, this board in particular holds significance too for the many boards that came after TGR Jane and 910 that would not have existed otherwise.
It is clear that some keyboards can challenge the status quo with their eye-catching designs and unparalleled design choices. Individuals like Charo, who promote the fusion of innovation, community and personal expression, help the fruition of these unique boards. As the hobby continues to evolve, it is clear that its allure is not only in visual engagement but also in the timeless artistry and rich history that each keyboard embodies.
